About Monica Parham, LMHC
Therapy with me is collaborative, grounded, and deeply attuned. Many of the people I work with come in wanting to understand and change patterns that have felt hard to break. Together, we’ll explore the origins of those patterns, the needs they once met, and the new ways of relating to yourself and others that feel more aligned with who you are now.
My approach blends psychoeducation and exploration. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor based in New York City, I often share elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and schema therapy to help you understand how certain patterns develop and what keeps them in place. From there, we’ll experiment with new perspectives and behaviors, using curiosity and compassion as guides. I see myself as both a collaborator and a gentle challenger, someone who meets you with warmth while also encouraging growth and accountability.
With teens, I take a relational, rapport-driven approach and often collaborate with parents to support change beyond the therapy room. Whether our focus is insight, behavioral change, or both, my goal is to help you feel empowered, understood, and capable of meaningful, lasting change. Have questions? Visit my FAQ.
Before becoming a therapist, I worked in early literacy research at a clinic in Washington Heights that provided comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations and educational advocacy for underrepresented communities. That experience deepened my understanding of how social context, access, and identity shape mental health and are perspectives I continue to carry into my work today.
I was born and raised in the South Bronx and earned my Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Fordham University. I also hold a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from New York University, where my passion for understanding people and advocating for diverse communities first began. Outside the therapy room, I can often be found binging Star Wars and The X Files and spending time with loved ones.
I strive to make therapy a space where you feel curious, welcome, and understood. My approach is honest, warm, and down to earth, rooted in acceptance and judgment-free. Whether you’re navigating long-standing patterns or new challenges, my goal is to help you explore what’s happening beneath the surface in a way that feels safe and meaningful.
What I love most about this work is witnessing people grow, seeing them feel lighter, more confident, and more at ease over time. I take seriously the responsibility of showing up each week and holding space for that process. Some of the most meaningful moments are when clients tell me, “I was thinking about what you said…”, a reminder that therapy can resonate beyond the session and support real, lasting change.
